Pumpkin Chuckin' – October 24, 1-3pm (Tentative) Meet Team
“Two Buck Chuck” and their powerhouse pumpkin-chunkin’
trebuchet! Originally built in 2018 for national competitions in
Aurora, CO, the machine was designed by Preston Fayas and
Alex Houchens using the classic trebuchet concept: a massive
counterweight bucket on one end and a sling on the other to
launch pumpkins sky-high. Over time, the team has upgraded
the design—tweaking geometry for greater distance and even
adding elastic bands to boost the counterweight, creating a
trebuchet/catapult hybrid. Preston, a local mortgage lender
originally from Green Bay, WI now living in Johnstown, teamed
up with Alex, a Greeley-raised welder and mechanical engineer
now residing in Hudson. The name “Two Buck Chuck” came from
the humble beginnings of their first machine, which was built
mostly from scraps with only about $200 invested—“two bucks”
as they joked. Today, their towering contraption stands 27 feet tall when extended and has launched
pumpkins an impressive 875 feet—nearly three football fields!
